Derek Chung is a co-founder and principal at Tactile Pictures, a digital design and development studio founded in 1995. At Tactile Pictures, he leads engineering and design efforts to create new products including an early MP3 device, a pioneering social networking application, new medical and audio devices, and the Tactile12000, a DJ software application that was recognized in Print magazine’s Digital Design annual in 2000. His clients at Tactile Pictures have included Apple Computer, Macromedia, Cisco, IDEO, and numerous startups and non-profit organizations. He is also the founder of Volunteer Crew, a website for facilitating informal volunteering, and has worked as a software developer for Adobe Systems and Oracle Corporation.

In 1999, he co-founded Urbanpixel, a technology startup that developed an innovative way of organizing and navigating content on the web. Derek was also Managing Director of Kearny Street Workshop, the oldest multidisciplinary Asian American arts organization in the country, and co-founded Many Threads, a media non-profit. His work has been shown at Kearny Street Workshop/Somarts, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Asian Art Museum, and he attended a residency at Banff Centre for the Arts in Alberta, Canada. He has a master’s degree from the Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP) at Tisch School of the Arts at New York University and bachelor’s degrees in Computer Engineering and Applied Math/Computer Science from Carnegie Mellon University.
